Snow Bunting

Snow Buntings are very confiding small birds which make nice photographic subjects. Every Autumn, these Buntings use Fair Isle as a stop over to the feed up before continuing there migration south.  Below is three images taking on a cool dull day.

This little fellow just popped up 10 feet in front of me on some yellow lichen as I was watching 20+ Porpoise

Its natural suttle plumage makes the bunting just blend into its surroundings.

The New 'Fair Isle Lodge and Bird Observatory' (FIBO)

In the past decade, I have spent a considerable amount of time living and working on Fair Isle at the world famous Bird Observatory. In June 2010, The new multi-million pound buiding was opened to the public for the first time. This blog post will show you some images of  FIBO in its fantastic surroundings.

Crested Pom / Chinaranian Portraits

Here  is a few dog  portraits of a small toy cross breed. He is known as a Crested Pom / Chinaranian and is quite photogenic.

Crested Pom - Stiking a pose, You can tell there is some Chinese powder puff in his looks. 

There were sun rays come through the blinds of the bay window giving me the oppotunity to work with shadows.
I quite like the way this image has turned out.

After figuring out how to do this type of image, I thought I give it a try and see how it went.

Dalmatian Portaits

I have a fun loving Dalmatian who loves having his photograph Taken. Below is a few images of my spotty hound in different surroundings. My aim is to try to capture and photograph different expressions.

My first attempt at this type of portrait photo, Through advice, I have tweeked it a little. I have cloned out the white patch on his ear so it was less distracting from its eye. I have made the eye brighter so it lures you in alot more.

Im quite happy with happy to say Im no expert!!

This image was taken on a lovely cool winters day, There was a lot of snow on the ground
which reflected of the dogs Black and white fur which I thought he stud out alot more against the
woodland surroundings

Here we happen to find a resting spot where the sun was filtering through the trees.
It was late afternoon on a cool February day where the sun was not as bright.

This photo has a lovely story to it.
I headed to the bus stop not realising that the front door did not shut propally. About half way there, I could hear some tiny tapping on the pavement behind me so I looked back only to find the spotty hound (with a certain sneaky look about him) following me. I just loved the fact that you could tell he knew excatly what he was doing (normally he will like to be in front)........ I missed the bus but He defintley made me smile!!

I just love the expression on both of there faces.

Turnstone to Twite with the odd Lamb Chucked in too

A vast number of sheep live on Fair isle, so its quite inevitable that their will be some images of  these wooly animals on this blog. I decided to to see what my new camera can do with Black and white photography and Im quite happy with the outcome of the image.

Down on the beach in North Haven, There is still good numbers of waders feeding along the waters edge and quite often you can approach quite close to them. Below is a image of a Turnstone is being curious about what I was doing there.

In stark contrast to the sandy beach in North Haven, Across the causeway in South Haven, Pebbles and Rocks are the main habbitat with alot of washed up seaweed. The next image is also that of a Turnstone of which they can be much harder to see.

Twites are a small brown finches with a forked tails which usally grace the feeders. To look at a flock of Twite, they look like little brown jobs which is not much  to look at, but when you look closely at an  individual, they have lovely  markings with different buffs and browns. We have good numbers that breed in shetland and are a must see bird to have on you bird list.

Fulmars

Its that time of the year when most of our Fulmar chicks will be fledging and quite often you see groups of them congregating and chattering to one another either at sea or on the cliffs. At the moment the island is battered by a SW gale giving the Fulmars the chance to dance around in the Air.

The New Camera......Christmas must of come early!!

Yesterday of the afternoon plane, A parcel had arrived of which I did not know that I was getting it until about 4 days ago. A Nikon  D60 with a Sigma 150-500mm automactic lens had gone on sale in Shetland, I thought this is a oppotunity not to be missed  so I decided to purchase it.

All day today I spent my time with my new toy photographing Waders on the beach and it felt Like all my Birthdays and Christmas's had rolled in to one....WOW!!.....I Love it !!!

Below is a few pictures That I took today. The weather and lighting was not very good but I still managed to get to decent images.
